Cybersecurity Without the Buzzwords

Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be confusing.

This guide explains some of the most common security terms in plain English so you can better understand how they help protect your business.

Common Cybersecurity Terms

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Think of MFA as a second lock on your front door. Even if someone steals your password, they still need a second form of verification—such as an authentication app or security key—to access your account.

Firewall

A firewall acts like a security guard standing at the entrance to your network. It monitors incoming and outgoing traffic and helps block unauthorized connections before they reach your computers.

Cloud

The cloud simply means your information is stored securely on systems managed by a trusted provider instead of only on a computer in your office. Examples include Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Google Workspace, Dropbox, and other online services.

Ransomware

Ransomware is malicious software that locks or encrypts your files so you cannot access them. Attackers then demand payment in exchange for restoring access, although paying does not guarantee your files will be recovered.

Why This Matters

Understanding basic cybersecurity concepts helps business owners make informed decisions, ask better questions, and reduce unnecessary risk.

You don’t need to become an IT expert—you just need a trusted partner who can explain security in plain English.
